Words

Quand Dieu naquit

Quand Dieu naquit a Noël
dedans la Judée,
On vit ce jour solennel
de joie inondée;
Il n’était petit ni grand,
qui n’apportât son présent,
Et no no no no
Et n’offrit, frit, frit
Et no no, et n’offrit,
Et n’offrit sans cesse
toute sa richesse.

L’un apportait un agneau
avec un grand zèle,
L’autre un peu de lait nouveau
dedans une écuelle;
Tel, sous ses pauvres habits
cachait un peu de pain bis,
Pour la la la la
Pour la sain, sain, sain,
Pour la la, pour la sainte Vierge
et Joseph Concierge.

Allons, bergers, partons tous:
L’ange nous appelle;
Un saveur et né pour nous,
l’heureuse nouvelle!
Une é-table et le séjour
qu’a choisi ce Dieu d’amour;
Courons au zau zau,
Courons plus plus plus,
Courons au, courons au plus vite,
a ce pauvre gîte.

Translation

When God was born

When God was born at Christmas, in the land of Judea, one saw that portentous day filled with joy. There was no-one, big or small, who didn’t bring a gift and unceasingly offer all his wealth.

One very eagerly brought a lamb. Another a little fresh milk in a bowl. This one, under his rags, hid a little brown bread for the holy virgin and her companion Joseph.

Come, shepherds, let’s all go: the angel is calling us. A Savior is born for us - happy news!
A stable is the resting place that this God of love has chosen. Let’s run, faster, to that humble dwelling.

Translated by Penny Phillips
