A song

Poem by William Soutar (1898-1943)
Music by Michael Buck

SATB spacer performance time approx 0m 45s

Editor's note

This is a little setting of a little jewel of a poem by Scots poet William Soutar. The rhythm shifts charmingly between 6/8 and 3/4, while the melody carries the feeling behind the words.

Other settings of Soutar poems which could be used as companion pieces include Ballad, Day is düne and Sang (all published by Canasg).

A recording by Rudsambee company of singers is available on their album bottled at source (RUBEECD003).

Words

A song

And wud ye tak love lichtly [would you take love lightly]
And lat it bide or gang [let it stay or go]
As a bird that tarrows in the tree [lingers]
Singing owre its sang? [over]

And wud ye tak love lichtly
At the fleur-time and the fa', [flower-time, or spring, and fall, or autumn]
And hae a hert as warm and hale [have a heart] [healthy]
Whan the cauld winds blaw? [cold winds blow]

William Soutar (1898-1943)
