An Indian summer Sunday

words and tune by Peter Hill

arranged by Sheena Phillips
for soprano solo
and soprano, alto, tenor and bass chorus

SATB performance time approx 2m 30s

Composer's note

This a slow, dreamy and wistful piece set to wonderful words by Peter Hill, with cool jazz harmonisation. The song depicts a lazy afternoon on a Scottish loch in late summer and should be kept very smooth and horizontal in feel, like the unruffled water of the loch, with no sudden changes in dynamic. Depending on the strength of your soloist, the accompanying parts can sing either to 'aah' or on an open or closed hum in verse 1.

The piece is of medium difficulty. A good ear is needed in the lower voices to pitch and hold the jazz harmonies, and there is some crossing over of parts.

A recording by Rudsambee company of singers is available on citrus and honey (RUBEECD002).

Words

An Indian summer Sunday

On Loch Faskally's surface there is no trace of breeze,
Clouds are giant airships impaled upon the trees.
The sunlight turns the water into ruby wine,
When summer's nearly over, think of me sometime.

Treacle red reflections cling to our limbs and hair,
Swans glide in slow motion pretending we're not there.
When water lapping gently and muffled voice combine,
When a golden day is fading, think of me sometime.

A single bright star shining studs the wedgwood sky
Overhead, and silently a single bird flies high.
When the trees upon the shore show autumn's certain sign,
With the first star of the evening, think of me sometime.

Peter Hill
