The sweet delights of love

anonymous three-part round for equal or mixed voices

SATB performance time approx 1'25 (if sung simply until all parts are in and the punchline delivered)

from

Jane Chattock's book of rounds

Editor's note

This harmonious song - with a twist - is one of many rounds found in a small music manuscript book inscribed with the name of Jane Chattock. The book, which came to light in a second-hand bookshop in Edinburgh, is dated November 1832, and the entries are in many different hands, suggesting that Jane invited friends and visitors to add rounds to her collection.

If sung with mixed voices, it is effective for male voices to start and to be the first to deliver the third (and punch-) line. Other rounds from Jane Chattock's book include: Come buy my cherries, Come hither boy and Che pena ch'affanno ('What a nuisance') (all published by Canasg).

Words

The sweet delights of love

Give me the sweet delights of love.
Let not anxious care destroy them.
Oh! how divine, oh! how divine still to enjoy them,
Oh! how divine still still to enjoy them.

Pure are the blessings love bestowing:
Peace and harmony ever flowing.
Peace and harmony, peace and harmony,
Peace and harmony ever, ever flowing.

A smoaky house,
A failing trade,
Six squalling brats and a scolding jade;
Six squalling brats and a scolding jade.

Anon.
