The midgies descending

written by Sheena Phillips
for unaccompanied SATB chorus

SATB performance time approx 1m 10s

Composer's note

This piece was written in anticipation of persecution by midges (or 'midgies' as they are known in many places) on a tour of Northwest Scotland by Rudsambee company of singers in 1999. In fact, Scottish midges do not make an audible noise, but I believe they would sound like this if they did.

Between each breath, all notes should be joined, with accents added where marked for that ominous effect of the midge near the ear. Each new part should stand out as it comes in - especially the soprano supermidge in bars 15 ff. The midges were worst at Lochcarron, incidentally.

Hear a MIDI file of the notes (but you really have to hear it hummed to get the true effect!)
